Adoption Story

Our First Cat

We decided to adopt a cat as I was currently out of work and had the time to settle a pet. So we went down to the local RSPCA. We walked down the long corridor lined on both sides by pairs of a door with window, looking on to a small rooms each housing one or two cats. I must confess the circuit of the corridor, I don't remember any particular cats.

We flagged down a RSPCA volunteer and he was very helpful with advice on cat ownership. We noticed one very friendly black lady pushing against the glass trying to get our attention but the volunteer explain though she looked friendly, she was feral and due to be relocated to a feral shelter. In the next room to feral lady was a sleeping black cat curled in a cat basket placed on a narrow shelf in front of the window. The volunteer explained that the sleeping cat, CPC was very friendly and had been at the shelter for three months after he was rescued from a local multistory car park. We fell in love with CPC, he was so friendly with us, despite having just be woken up. He seemed desperate to get out of the shelter and he actually tried to leave his room with us.

At the time I was very concerned with his age 8 years old, I thought this was very old for a cat (I now know he was just middle aged) and although we hadn't decided on a particular type or age of cat, we had a discussion in the reception about CPC. We decided that we wanted to adopt him and he just happened to be 8 years old, so be it. We asked if we could adopt him, the receptionist asked if she could ring the cattery to let them know the news. When she told them, we virtually heard the cheer from the reception building. CPC was a popular cat and they were happy he had found a new home.

The RSPCA insist on a cooling down period, so we arranged to come back to collect CPC the next day. I received a call the next morning from the shelter explaining that CPC had developed a minor eye infection and what did we want to do, wait until he was better to pick him up OR drop the adoption ??? I asked if we could treat him ourselves and still bring him home as arranged and the shelter agreed, relieved that we still wanted CPC.

We renamed CPC, George, as I always wanted a cat called George. As soon as he was home, he meowed to get out of the traveling cage and ran out of the quiet space we had made for him, to us. He spent the next 6 hours asking for cuddles. and following us if we moved anywhere. He was so excited he didn't nap for 16 hours. But he's calmed down now and sleeps 20 out of 24 hours (on my head when he can..lol) George is 8 years old. He is laid back and very cuddly on his terms. He sleeps on my head at night and only moves for food or a sunny spot in the garden.
